[dropcap]M[/dropcap]other's Day is a special occasion filled with celebration all around the world.  It is a time where we honor all moms and show our appreciation and gratitude.  Mother's Day takes place on the second Sunday in May.  Around this time, flowers and shrubs are beginning to bloom out in the garden.  May is a month spent outdoors enjoying nature, as well as the gorgeous spring weather.  Why not give a gift from your very own garden?  Another fun idea is to give a present that will spruce up your mom's favorite outdoor spot.  Maybe even attract some beautiful pollinators and wildlife!

Did you know that carnations are the official flower for this special day?  The carnation flower represents purity, admiration and love.  The founder of this holiday, Anna Jarvis, wished for this flower to be distributed to mothers.  This is how the tradition of gifting flowers on this day came to be.  It is always wonderful to gift someone you love flowers.  In this post, I will share some suggestions that go beyond just the regular type of arrangement.   Sometimes you want to gift something that can be displayed or enjoyed a bit longer than cut flowers.  Here are a few ideas that I'm sure any mother would love!

Put Together A Flower Filled Hanging Basket

Impress her by putting together a stunning flower filled hanging basket.  This gift will last longer, and the basket can be used time and time again!  Head to your local gardening supply store, pick out a unique and fun basket.  Remember, the smaller sized baskets will dry out quicker.  Keep this in mind when choosing.  Then, purchase a small bag of potting soil and the plants of your choice.  When picking out plants for your basket, take into consideration whether it will be hanging in sun or shade.  You want to make sure your flowers flourish in the correct environment.  Flowers that do very well in hanging baskets include calibrachoa, geraniums, petunias and lobelia.

Proven Winners Superbells Holy Moly! is a calibrachoa hybrid that does well in full sun.  It blooms from spring to fall and is a stunning combination of yellow and pink.  It is also a great flower that is easy to maintain and requires no deadheading. They are heat tolerant and require well-drained soil.  I used three plants when putting together this hanging basket.

A Flower Basket

Don't have a place to hang flowers? That's okay! Another great option is to fill a medium sized basket or planter with flowers.  If you choose a basket, make sure it has a plastic liner to keep the soil in.  Pick plants that will thrive in either sun or shade depending on the spot.  Shown below is a basket I filled with Proven Winners Superbena Royale Cherryburst and Proven Winners Supertunia Black Cherry.  These two flowers, verbena and petunias, do well in part sun.  They are both vigorous growers and bloom all season long.  Look for flowers that are drought tolerant and heat tolerant.  Try picking colors that compliment each other and add visual appeal. That's the fun part about arranging yourself—it's all up to you!  You can even look for your mother's favorite color to make her really smile.

For The Feathered Friends

Any mother looking for a source of tranquility will enjoy the peaceful sounds of the birds singing their lovely tune. Waking up to the relaxing sound of birds chirping outside the window is perhaps one of the best things in life.  Birds require a good source of food to be drawn to your yard.  If you want them to stay, adding a source of water and shelter will really boost the activity in the yard.

I like to look for garden accents that serve a purpose and have a bit of artistic appeal.  No matter what size bath you choose, putting it near a feeder increases the activity immensely. Make sure when choosing a location for your newly gifted bath, you pick a place that can be viewed from a window.  Seeing the birds splash around in the new bath will surely bring happiness to any viewer. All you need to do is take your dried herbs, pick out a good sized bunch and tie them with a ribbon or bow.  It adds a sweet fragrance to any room, and looks pretty as well!  The calming qualities of this herb also help aid in sleep.  Giving your mother the gift of a good nights sleep is pretty much priceless!

As a gardener, I'm sure we all have a similar love/hate relationship with the squirrels and chipmunks in our yards.  Looking for a way to keep them distracted or give your mom a hearty chuckle?  Look no further than the squirrel chair feeder!  All you do is hang this chair on a tree easily viewed from a window, add on a dried corn cob and enjoy the show!  It really does keep them distracted from messing with your feeders.  It's adorable to watch them nibble. Sadly for the squirrels in my yard, they are too slow compared to those sneaky chipmunks and usually get second helpings. You can also add dried fruit and watch them go to town!
